10 Early Warning Signs of Arthritis

Don't assume joint pain is a "normal" part of aging. These warning signs could be signaling something more serious

Arthritis, a condition that impacts your musculoskeletal system and, primarily, your joints, is the leading cause of disability among people aged 55 and over. When broken down from its Greek and Latin roots, the word arthritis means “joint inflammation” – which is its hallmark symptom.

Arthritis is very common, impacting about one in five U.S. adults. However, it doesn’t refer to just one disease. There are over 100 medical conditions that fall under the arthritis label, with osteoarthritis, the degeneration of cartilage in your joints (typically as the result of wear-and-tear or misuse) being the most common.

The next two most common forms of arthritis are rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and juvenile arthritis, which are autoimmune diseases in which your immune system attacks your body’s own tissues. Other types of arthritis may be caused by infection in your joints, psoriasis, excess uric acid (gout) and more.

Despite the very different underlying causes, however, the most common types of arthritis lead to similar symptoms of pain, swelling, stiffness and, possibly, loss of function in your joints. Still, the early signs of arthritis aren’t always as cut and dry as they may seem. According to the Arthritis Foundation:

“Arthritis might seem simple, but it’s really not … Arthritis can start in many ways, and can be difficult to recognize. It can come on slowly and be mild, or it can start suddenly and cause intense pain that surges within a few hours. The signs and symptoms can come and go over time. It might cause the classic issues of joint pain, swelling and stiffness, or it may first cause health problems that seem unrelated, like fatigue or a rash. Early signs of arthritis might be mistaken for an injury or the result of “too much” activity.

Of course, not every joint ache or pain needs medical treatment, but there are certain signs and symptoms that could signal something more serious than expected.”

1. Pain, swelling or stiffness in your joints:
These are the typical hallmarks of arthritis, but each may be sending you a warning for very different reasons. Swelling by itself may be caused by a variety of underlying reasons, which require further investigation... (Learn more)

2. Joints that are red or warm to the touch:
The presence of "heat" in a joint is a serious warning sign of a more severe underlying condition that may involve a compromised immune system and, if left unattended, lead to permanent damage to joints, as well as to vital internal organs. Here are some ways to put out the heat... (Learn more)

3. Joint tenderness or stiffness
We all get a little stiff as we get older, but there's a certain way to measure if your level of joint stiffness is a signal of arthritis. If you experience joint stiffness for more than an hour, you could be experiencing a form of arthritis. Some easy to do exercises like you'll see on the next page can improve this condition... 4. Difficulty moving a joint or decreased range of motion (loss of flexibility)
If you're having trouble standing, walking, bending to tie your shoes, etc., arthritis could be the culprit. If not properly addressed, more serious damage can be caused to the soft tissue, cartilage and bone... (Learn more)

5. A dull pain or burning sensation in your joints
Pain that is constant or comes and goes, and/or joints that "sting" inside are very serious telltale signs of arthritis. Gout, for instance, is one of the most painful forms of arthritis, yet can be easily treated and then prevented from recurring with some simple techniques... (Learn more)

6. Fatigue or general weakness (and in some cases even fever or rash)
People don't usually associate a "run down" feeling with arthritis. However, because arthritis can affect the immune system, and inflammation caused by arthritis can damage vital internal organs, this could be another sign of the onset of arthritis... (Learn more)

7. Morning stiffness
If you find it difficult to move in the morning, you're not alone. Most people describe this symptom as an “ache” combined with difficulty moving. The amount of time morning stiffness lasts is the key. If you find it difficult to move shortly after getting out of bed and moving around, we've developed some simple stretches to help increase mobility...(Learn more)

8. Joint pain that occurs after periods of increased use (such as heavy gripping); the pain may not occur until hours later or even not until the next day.
Prolonged overuse of certain joints such at the knees, hands and wrists creates wear and tear on those joints, causing damage to the cartilage. Left unattended, permanent damage to the joint is not uncommon. Here’s how to prevent it...(Learn more)

9. A grating or grinding sensation in the affected joints.
Joints need fluid and cushion to operate correctly. A grinding or grating sensation is another serious indication of arthritis. Without proper treatment like you'll see on the next page, permanent, disabling joint damage can result... (Learn more)

10. Hearing clicking or cracking when you move your joints.
"Popping, clicking, snapping & cracking" noises in a joint could be a sign of serious damage to the ligaments, or even a dislocation. More serious cases involve torn cartilage and/or deterioration caused by osteoarthritis. These newly discovered methods are proving effective for stopping and reversing the damage caused by arthritis... (Learn more)

If you have experienced any of the above, you may be wondering if there is anything you can actually do to prevent it from getting any worse — or better yet — reversing arthritis and turning back time.

I developed a brutal form of osteoarthritis as a teenager, leaving me in constant pain so bad I could barely walk.

When mainstream western drugs and treatments gave me little to no relief, I left home in search of answers. It kick started a health crusade that after 15 years of travel, studying with doctors and healers from around the world, and earning 3 degrees in medicine, I pieced together the answers that gave me COMPLETE RELIEF from 30 years of misery.

In my new book, Arthritis Reversed, I discuss ideas, insights and techniques even your doctor has NEVER heard of… simple techniques you can use together, to quickly, and effectively eliminate your pain.

But I Must First Warn You…

My work is very controversial and the powers-that-be would like to silence me because the information I’ll be sharing threatens to spoil the massive profits of big drug companies. The same companies that have lead you to believe that arthritis can not be reversed and that you must take their drugs for the rest of your life in order to simply manage your arthritis and prevent it from getting worse.
